You will do a read-aloud of the story Thumbtacks, Earwax, Lipstick, Dipstick What is a Compound Word by Brian Cleary (book not included) or any picture book you have on compound words. You will have a discussion about compound words and if they knew any in the book.
☞ a Guided Practice Activity where the students will work together now that they are familiar with compound words. The students will create compound words by taking 2 cards from the puzzle cards that are included. They will brainstorm words that would match the picture, and this will be written on the chart.
☞ an Independent Practice Activity where the students will complete a compound word Tab-Its® booklet. This can be done with or without a partner. You can easily have your students glue this in their reading or language arts interactive notebook.
